# How a TikTok Ban Can Cripple Your Small Business

## Is TikTok getting banned in the US?

Tensions over TikTok's future continue to swirl.

TikTok has found itself at the center of political scrutiny. With concerns over data privacy lingering among decision-makers, the app's situation remains precarious in the United States. As discussions intensify, opinions remain divided on whether TikTok poses any real threat.

Speculation has fueled debates across diverse sectors.

The potential for a ban underscores the vulnerability of businesses and influencers. Relying heavily on a single platform can expose them to sudden market shifts. Preparing for contingencies is crucial, urging enterprises to explore varied digital avenues to safeguard their growth and viability.

By approaching digital marketing with resilience and adaptability, businesses can transform challenges into opportunities that bolster their longevity.

Imagine waking up to the news that TikTok, a vital marketing channel for your business, has been abruptly banned, severing a significant source of customer engagement and revenue stream. This was the case just days ago when many users logged on to their mobile app and were faced with a message from TikTok that resembled the graphic below.

![Screenshot from the TikTok app on January 19th when the TikTok ban took affect.](https://www.ragingbulldigital.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/IMG_9182-473x1024.png)Screenshot from the TikTok app on January 19th when the TikTok ban took effect.

Consider how this sudden change could unravel your marketing strategies.

National security concerns often prompt governmental actions like the issuance of an executive order to ban widely-used apps, as policymakers weigh the implications of sensitive data potentially falling into foreign hands. This raises significant questions for businesses relying on such platforms, as national security becomes intertwined with business sustainability and the digital economy. Similar scenarios, such as the growing scrutiny on TikTok, have occurred in recent years, bringing to light the need for businesses to adapt to politically-driven changes in the digital landscape.

## Where Does TikTok Stand After President Trump's Executive Order?

A bill passed in early 2024 originally slated the TikTok ban for January 2025. On Jan. 18, just hours before midnight, the platform went dark, messaging users to inform them the app was banned. Approximately 12 hours later, service was restored, by way of a new executive order from President Donald Trump, signed on Jan. 20, 2025, that gave TikTok an extra 75 days to comply with the law.

Users with TikTok installed can access the app in this extension period, but new users cannot download TikTok as Apple and Google have abstained from providing it in their respective stores.

This 75-day extension, allows Trump time to consult with his advisors and leaders of relevant departments and agencies to address the national security issues associated with TikTok. Some businesses say "[If TikTok goes dark, they'll lose their livelihoods](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/tik-tok-ban-small-businesses-creators/)".

Ben Sperry, a senior scholar at the International Center for Law & Economics, noted that the [executive order occupies a "gray area](https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2025/01/27/tiktok-ban-extension-trump/77972345007/)." According to federal law, it is illegal for U.S. companies, such as internet hosting services and app stores, to maintain, distribute, or update TikTok, as it is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. Nevertheless, Trump's order seems to encourage companies to disregard this law, suggesting they might not face consequences, Sperry explained.

### The TikTok Ban Timeline and Future Prospects

Over the years, TikTok has faced significant scrutiny in the United States. Here's a detailed timeline of the events surrounding the TikTok ban:

- **September 2020**: The Trump Administration made its first attempt to block TikTok using emergency powers.

- **January 2023**: TikTok introduced a $1.5 billion initiative, Project Texas, to relocate all U.S. user data to the United States, aiming to address privacy and security concerns. This plan involved transferring data to Oracle's cloud and establishing a U.S. subsidiary for management. However, it failed to convince Congress, which voted to ban the app.

- **February 2023**: The Biden Administration prohibited TikTok on devices used by federal employees.

- **March 2023**: The FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice began investigating claims that TikTok spied on American journalists. TikTok's CEO, Chew, testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, addressing issues related to consumer privacy, data security, mental health impacts, and concerns about its parent company, ByteDance.

- **March 2024**: The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a ban in U.S. app stores and websites. The bill moved to the Senate but was not voted on.

- **April 2024**: Both the House and Senate approved a foreign aid package that included the TikTok legislation. President Biden signed it into law shortly thereafter.

- **May 2024**: TikTok filed a lawsuit in the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., arguing that the law was unconstitutional as it restricted free speech and unlawfully seized private property. Additionally, eight content creators sued the U.S. government, claiming the law violated their First Amendment rights.

- **December 2024**: A federal appeals court unanimously upheld the TikTok ban, dismissing TikTok's constitutional challenge.

- **January 2025**:

**January 17**: The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the federal law banning TikTok, pending a sell-off, with plans to enforce the ban on January 19.

- **January 18**: TikTok ceased service for U.S. users, displaying a message that the app was banned. It was also removed from app stores.

- **January 19**: An executive order from Trump delayed the ban's enforcement by 75 days, until April 4, 2025.

### Why the U.S. Seeks to Ban TikTok

The primary motivation behind the U.S. government's desire to ban TikTok is national security. Lawmakers fear that ByteDance could be compelled to share U.S. user data with the Chinese government. TikTok is classified as a Foreign Adversary Controlled Application under U.S. law.

During a hearing on TikTok's national security risks, Committee Chair Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers expressed concerns about Chinese laws requiring companies like ByteDance to conduct espionage on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party.

TikTok publishes transparency reports detailing formal legal requests for user data. The most recent report indicated a record number of requests from law enforcement in the first half of 2024, totaling 13,166 globally.

While national security concerns are at the forefront, U.S. lawmakers have raised additional issues with TikTok, including:

- **Addictiveness**: TikTok's addictive nature is a concern, though it has implemented a feature prompting users to take breaks after 60 minutes.

- **Misinformation**: TikTok claims to prohibit misinformation as per its community guidelines and actively works to remove it. The platform also does not accept political ads.

- **Children's Safety**: Concerns exist about children misusing the app. TikTok has taken steps to protect young users, offering a different experience for those under 13 in the U.S., such as restricting their ability to go viral and use private messaging.

- **Mental Health**: Content promoting harmful behaviors like eating disorders, tobacco use, or suicide is a concern. TikTok, like other social media platforms, has content moderation policies to remove such content.

- **Selling Data**: There are worries about TikTok collecting and selling unnecessary data. TikTok asserts it does not sell data to brokers.

- **Data Security**: Data leaks are a risk with any online service, including social media. TikTok employs data access protocols to safeguard and categorize data based on sensitivity.

Even before the federal ban, TikTok was prohibited on devices used by federal and public sector employees and on state employees' phones in over half of U.S. states. Several states have also taken legal action against TikTok. Indiana was the first to sue, alleging the app serves inappropriate content and violates consumer protection laws in its data practices. Arkansas also filed a lawsuit against TikTok, ByteDance, and Meta, accusing them of violating the Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

Montana became the first U.S. state to pass legislation banning TikTok on all personal devices. Although a federal judge blocked the ban in November 2023, citing First Amendment violations, the law would have prevented the app's operation within the state and imposed fines on app stores hosting TikTok up to $10,000 per day.

Additionally, several universities have banned TikTok on their networks.

### Parties Interested in Buying TikTok

Several parties have expressed interest in buying TikTok, including:

- **Microsoft**: [According to Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/technology/trump-says-microsoft-is-talks-acquire-tiktok-2025-01-28/), US President Donald Trump said that Microsoft was in discussions to acquire TikTok.

- **Elon Musk**: The owner of X and CEO of Tesla

- **Larry Ellison**: The chairman of Oracle

- **Jimmy Donaldson (MrBeast)**: A YouTuber who has posted about possibly buying TikTok

- **Bobby Kotick**: The former CEO of Blizzard-Activision

- **Mnuchin**: The former Treasury secretary who created an investor group to purchase TikTok

Other parties that have been considered include: Oracle and Walmart. However, it's not clear if any of these parties are serious about buying TikTok. ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent company, has repeatedly said it doesn't plan to sell. The Chinese government is also unlikely to approve a sale that includes TikTok's algorithm. Both former US presidents, Donald Trump and Joe Biden, have tried to force ByteDance to sell TikTok's US operations on national security grounds.

So, that leaves us with the core topic:

## How a TikTok ban Could Hurt Small Business

At [Raging Bull Digital](https://www.ragingbulldigital.com/), we understand the ramifications of such a scenario, and we are here to inspire small businesses to build resilient marketing foundations that thrive beyond digital uncertainties. We'll dive into some of that below, but first, consider the following points:

### Dependency on TikTok for Revenue

Has TikTok become indispensable to your business, weaving itself into the fabric of your revenue generation model?

Since 2016, TikTok's meteoric rise, fueled by its parent company ByteDance, has captivated millions, providing small businesses with unprecedented access to vast audiences, fueling growth and engagement.

Yet, it's all too easy to pin one's ambitions on such a singular pillar of the digital world without considering the sweeping impacts on your financial future should this vital platform evaporate.

Within the tumult of the modern marketplace, relying solely on TikTok isn't a bastion of security or sustainability. Diversifying your digital marketing, through a robust [SEO strategy](https://www.ragingbulldigital.com/seo-services/), engaging GEO campaigns, and delivering a comprehensive AEO strategy, ensures broader horizons and mitigates the impact of sudden disruptions.

Raging Bull Digital champions this approach, encouraging businesses to harness digital resilience beyond transient trends.

### Impact on Brand Visibility

The potential TikTok ban could significantly affect small businesses that rely on TikTok for brand visibility. Losing this platform means losing a broad reach to potential customers.

Brand visibility gets disrupted when primary advertising channels vanish without ample replacement. With TikTok's dynamic videos and viral potential, brands have enjoyed swift dissemination of their message, attracting, engaging, and converting audiences at high rates.

However, this is not an irreparable challenge; it is instead a call to action to diversify and adapt. Existing platforms like Instagram, and Facebook, and rising stars such as YouTube Shorts offer similar opportunities to maintain brand visibility. Yet, going beyond social media is vital. By enhancing a business website's organic reach through SEO, optimizing location-based [strategies with GEO](https://www.ragingbulldigital.com/generative-engine-optimization-seos-future/), and ensuring accessibility with AEO, businesses uphold consistent visibility. This multi-angle approach is an "insurance" that reinforces their market presence.

### Loss of Audience Engagement

An abrupt TikTok ban could drastically hinder businesses' engagement with their valued audiences, with whom they've cultivated vibrant interactions and brand loyalty, reminiscent of the drastic impacts seen during the Trump administration's previous attempts to restrict the app.

Engagement and brand loyalty are crucial factors driving businesses to thrive online.

Relying solely on [TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/en/), a platform owned by [ByteDance](https://www.bytedance.com/en/), as a channel for engagement robs you of a multitude of diverse and potentially more stable platforms to keep customer interactions lively, rewarding, and conducive to long-term relationships. By diversifying platforms, you reinforce resilience against sudden disruptions.

Your marketing strategy prospers as you shape an ecosystem that supports seamless transitions across different channels for healthy audience connections, empowering your business. Consider crafting experiences that not just win new customers but forge strong, enduring bonds that withstand external uncertainties. Through consistent storytelling and agile adaptation, "standing out" becomes not just possible but a hallmark of your thriving enterprise.

He is known for his TikTok videos, in which he silently mocks overly complicated “life hack” videos. In 2022, he was listed in Fortune’s 40 Under 40 and Forbes’ 30 Under 30. As of 2025, he is the most-followed user on TikTok.

### Challenges in Influencer Marketing

In an era where authenticity reigns supreme, what challenges does the landscape of influencer marketing present?

Since 2016, influencer marketing, a burgeoning industry, exploded with influencers driving sales and showcasing brands directly to their followers. However, their reliance on platforms like TikTok can expose businesses to vulnerabilities.

Indeed, it’s no small feat when an influencer's accounts suddenly vanish due to a platform like TikTok exiting the market, leaving brands that invested heavily without this crucial marketing avenue.

Navigating these waters means balancing the need for these dynamic partnerships without anchoring success to that precarious toe-hold. Diversifying to include other social platforms like TikTok, dedicated brand ambassadors, and even in-house advocates is indispensable.

In influencer marketing, as in all marketing, adaptability encourages sustainable success and mitigates risks.

### Importance of Diversified Marketing Strategies

Resilience comes from diversification.

Every small business owner knows the peril of reliance. When your marketing efforts are too narrowly concentrated on one platform, such as TikTok, you risk exposing yourself to significant vulnerabilities. Diversifying your marketing strategies ensures that even amidst the turbulence of a TikTok ban or an unexpected executive order, your business remains buoyant and continues to thrive.

Smart marketing spreads across multiple channels.

A diversified approach means leveraging SEO - [Search Engine Optimization](https://www.ragingbulldigital.com/seo-services/) techniques - so that your website naturally attracts visitors; GEO - Geographic Optimization - to target local customers; and AEO - Answer Engine Optimization - to enhance visibility wherever people search for answers.

During times of uncertainty, those businesses with a robust, diversified marketing mix can maintain strides in visibility, eliminating the dependency on a single platform. This strategy not only fortifies against sudden changes but also opens up expansive pathways for growth and innovation.

### Building Organic Growth with SEO

Smart strategies ignite organic growth naturally.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, SEO remains a cornerstone. The opportunity to reach new and targeted audiences without constant paid advertising is what makes SEO indispensable. Through deliberate keyword optimization, SEO allows businesses to appear when prospective customers search for products or services they offer, establishing credibility in their field.

The essence of harnessing SEO lies within targeted approaches.

By focusing on specifics such as on-page SEO - elements like meta tags and keyword density play a crucial role - alongside off-page strategies like high-quality backlinks, businesses can achieve long-lasting results. It's a proven pathway to enhance visibility and long-term growth.

The long-term benefits of organic growth outweigh the temporary gains offered by platforms. While TikTok, or any social media application, like those developed by ByteDance, can drive significant traffic short-term, the consistency of steady, search-driven traffic ensures business longevity. With algorithms constantly changing, groundwork in SEO lays a foundation that is resilient to industry shifts, platform bans, and even the influences of political figures like Trump.

In today's interconnected world, national security can also play a significant role in influencing digital marketing strategies. Businesses must be aware of how geopolitical issues could impact their operations, especially those with international audiences. Maintaining a flexible and diverse marketing plan not only mitigates the risks associated with national security concerns but also preserves business operations in the face of potential disruptions resulting from international tensions.

### Utilizing Social Media for Support

Social media, when leveraged wisely, serves not merely as a marketing channel but as a comprehensive support apparatus for your business operations.

Even without TikTok, other social platforms amplify your existing communication.

Platforms, such as Instagram and Facebook, bridge the connection with audiences (irrespective of geopolitical uncertainties) and regulations.

These platforms excel in offering immersive engagement opportunities by nurturing personal and professional relationships and securing your market position.

Social media should be strategically employed to supplement existing marketing initiatives, offering you an opportunity to reinforce your brand's message and solidify the rapport you've built with your audience over time.

Ultimately, the idea is to ensure that one’s work is supported across channels. Informed marketing strategies need to treat social media as tools within a broader, integrated marketing strategy.
